Whether it's a half-acre building envelope or a back field that hasn't seen a bush hog in twenty years, the job gets planned and quoted the same way: an on-site look at the ground before any equipment moves.
That on-site look matters more here than in most of Connecticut. The Litchfield Hills are steep and heavily wooded, and slope alone changes what equipment can safely reach a work area and how long a job actually takes. Underneath most of the county sits glacial till — a dense, boulder-laced mix of clay, sand, and silt — and in the hillier towns bedrock often sits close enough to the surface to limit how deep a stump can come out or how a site can be graded. None of that is a surprise to us; it's the baseline we plan around on nearly every job.
We treat forestry mulching, full lot clearing, and stump removal as different tools for different problems rather than a one-size answer. Mulching grinds standing brush and small trees into mulch on site, which is often the right call on steep or root-tangled ground where hauling debris off the property isn't practical. Full lot clearing strips a site down to bare, graded ground for new construction. Stump removal is its own separate step, and on shallow-bedrock parcels it takes more planning than people expect. Sorting out which combination a property actually needs is a big part of what an accurate estimate depends on.
Our work splits fairly evenly between two kinds of clients: second-home owners and weekenders moving up from Fairfield County and the New York metro area who are clearing land for a new build or a getaway property, and longtime county residents reclaiming old agricultural land — overgrown pasture, collapsed stone walls, fields that haven't been worked in decades — for building sites or simple everyday use again.
